1. Reward yourself

Set a deadline for every goal you have. It's best to sit down on a Sunday night or Monday morning and just take 10 to 15 minutes to plan out your entire week's agenda. Immediately set a deadline for every major/ most important goal or task that you have to do. For every 2 weeks do something nice for yourself, it could be anything you like whether buying that something extra special for yourself that you've always wanted, treat yourself to an at home facial, or even going on a weekend getaway. It doesn't even have to be something huge or expensive, my husband loves to just wind down with his favourite game after a hard day.

If you want to buy something for yourself but you're too tired to even get out of the house, you can always shop online. Check out my blog post about how to go about it, if you're an online shopping virgin.

2. Get Organized

Use the SMART method to set clear and specific goals.

If you're like me, big projects/ assignments can be really intimidating and sometimes you get overwhelmed to even start the whole thing. Therefore, break it up to smaller tasks or goals to make it more actionable. Create a list of all those milestones in your project and make sure to tick them one by one after you're done. At which point you apply Step 1 and reward yourself whenever you reach another milestone in your project!

3. Self-care is important

My job involves being around and teaching kids with learning difficulties. At times these kids can be a little handful as they're frustrated over their difficulties in the subjects learned and may even lash out on me. I stopped thinking that I have any control over how they're feeling or behaving. Of course I should do everything in my power as a teacher to create a positive environment for the kids to express theirselves and I should also be empathetic but how they behave shouldn't be taken personally. This is something that I feel is transferrable to any job. Putting yourself first and stop thinking that you have any control over how other people behave is a great step to becoming happier at the workplace.

4. Cut Off Your Work

Your working hours exist for a reason. Strive to only work during these hours. If you absolutely must bring your work home, do set a specific time or duration for you to complete it. Anything more than that allocated time? Screw it. Really. Same thing with studying set a specific time during the day for you to concentrate all your studying efforts, going to class and finishing up assignments, for example from 9am-5pm  everyday and completely unwind and forget about everything after 5 pm. Discipline is key to make sure you really do work within the allocated time.

5. Regular exercise

No matter how little you must do some sort of physical activity weekly. Say whatever you want, this is purely scientific. The more you work up a sweat the more endorphins your body produce and the happier you'll be. Furthermore, no one can be productive all the time, sometimes we need time off from the work desk to become more efficient at the workplace.

I remember my first ever memory of being in a Disneyland, the sparkling lights amidst the dark of the night, with the sounds and smell of things I hold dear in my heart. It was almost like a fantasy, like it was picked out of my most wonderful and vivid beautiful dreams. A month ago I returned to yet another Disneyland. I thought that neither my cynical adult mind would be able to comprehend nor my reluctant hardened heart would be able to appreciate the wonders and nostalgia that this place brings. Oh but I was wrong. How truly amazed I was, the same childish wonder that used to enchant me still exists. It's so great seeing all the darkness in the world and yet I can still be so touched by the simple wonders in it. Oh how truly naive and malleable our neuro plastic minds can be, almost everything we know can be reversed. Therein lies my faith, the world aint half as bad as it seems.

Nature Republic Soothing & Moisture Aloe Vera Cleansing Gel Foam
+ Great at cleansing without drying out the skin
+ Is a nice and gentle cleanser
+ At the price of RM29.90 on Hermo.my it is really affordable

This is my third time buying this cleanser and honestly I really have no qualms about it. It even smells like Aloe Vera. It leaves my skin feeling clean without that tight feeling on my skin which usually signifies that the cleanser might be too harsh or drying for my dry and sensitive skin. I would totally recommend this product to those with a similar skin type.

Nature Republic Aqua Super Max Moisture Watery Cream

+ An emollient and thick moisturiser that helps keep skin moisturised
+  Does not have a distinctive smell that can be quite repulsive to some people
- Packaging is not travel friendly. It is quite heavy and may break if you drop it.
Funny story about the packaging of this moisturiser. I don't keep any of my toiletries in the toilet, so I have to bring them with me into the toilet whenever I am getting into the shower. One day, I was carrying my moisturiser in and out of my toilet and given that the packaging is round and slippery, it totally slipped out of my fingers. I broke the top half. Thank god I was about done with the moisturiser and had to re-stock otherwise the broken cover would have been quite an inconvenience.

I went to Japan earlier this year and I spent about a week there. Normally, if I travel to any cold countries at all, mind you it was the end of my winter, my skin would crack and sting due to dryness, especially the skin around my nose. This time I was determined to not let that happen again, so, on the plane, every few hours or so I kept applying this moisturiser and the  Nature Republic Soothing & Moisture Aloe Vera 92% Soothing Gel and I never had any cracked skin at all. My younger sister was having a cold and she was experiencing dryness around her nose, because she was constantly rubbing her face with tissues and this routine helped her as well.

No one told me that after you graduate, you will be stuck in a sort of limbo between your party all night long college self and this sudden onslaught of adulthood. Perhaps, for the majority of people it's not that bad, cause not much will change. For me though, the change was rather magnified by the fact that I got married a few months after graduation. Let me tell you a few things that will change.

1. Clothes
Forget about those crop tops and summer jeans you used to strut your stuff in during uni days, those things are no longer wearable once you start working or you're married. Clothes is the first thing that will change once you start turning into an "adult". The dilemma is this, how do I dress up like a respectable adult? How do I look good while not looking like a prude? What brands do I buy from? Previously Cotton on and Forever 21 were my staples. Don't get me wrong, they're still good for the working life, but you have to start investing in better key pieces in your wardrobe. So, my one stop shop for everything work related has got to be Uniqlo. Lemme tell you, once you start working that 9-5 lifestyle, your work wardrobe will somehow find its way to your weekends too. So you now you have to find the right balance. Smartly dress on weekdays, more summer-y stuff on the weekends.

2. Priorities
Previously my priority was to go out and have fun on the weekends. Now, all I want to do on the weekends is sleep in and just watch tv really. For one thing, it helps to save money. Secondly, you just want to rest cause once Monday rolls over you're just like "I wanna stay in bed!!!!"

3.  You stop caring about what people think or say about you.
Let's face it, besides trying to pay your bills, going to the gym and doing adult stuff you really don't have the time to worry about petty things anymore like how many likes you get on instagram or what's the latest ridiculous fashion trends are anymore. On top of that, all of those nice stuff you used to do to please people, all that stuff went out the window because you realize that the only person whose opinion matters to you and your happiness is your own. Screw societal expectations.

All this time, I scrambled looking for an inspiration. I wondered at times why I haven't come back to this blog. Truth be told, I've been rather uninspired, demotivated to even find inspiration. Truth be told I couldn't be bothered. Now I know what you're thinking, then why have it at all? Then why keep it? I guess it's because I know that somewhere somehow I want to get back to producing a lot of things for this space. It's just that at one point I lost sight of why I'm doing it. Am I doing this for myself? For you? Why am I doing this? Does it make me feel good? These are the questions that have been going round at the back of my mind, never having had the chance to be asked. But now I'm here, asking this because I miss it. I know that a huge part of me it's like a rogue underpaid artist. Constantly bewildered, hostile and lost. But the beauty of this is that, I don't have to figure it all out. I can do whatever I want. This is my space. Screw what ppl are going to say. Screw concepts. Screw consistency. This is my blog, I can write whatever I want. So here I am. Writing nonsense only I can relate to. This is as profound as it gets :P

Friday, 30.1.2015

The husband and I had late brunch on Friday at Subang Parade at a place called Coffee Club. Food was good, ambiance was lovely as we can see the sidewalk from where we were seating and unexpectedly saw one of our oldest friends walking down the street and ended up catching up with him. We also took our first big step as a married couple that day. Post brunch, we decided to take pictures in front of a beautiful graffiti, I just saw it and decided I want a picture in front of it. Little did I know, tons of people would be looking at me through the glass wall from the inside of the cafe. I was shy as I had always been but I was determined to get my picture, so I did. It was a small chance that I took but what matters is that I took it. Sometimes, chances prop up in life and when it does, you have to grab it, it may not be exactly the way you want it to and you have a 50% percent chance of failing, I don't even know if the pictures I took was beautiful and that it was worth it, but I took it anyway, so every time I have a dilemma about something I'll just think of this moment and i'll just say to myself "take the damn picture", grab the opportunity. Failure or no, it might be just what you need to grow. Like my good friend once told me, "do whatever you want in life and go wherever you want to go, if it turns out good, it's great, if it turns out bad, it's a good experience."

Hi there lovelies, it has been awhile since I wrote a blog post. However today I'm coming back with a bang as I'm going to haul two of the items that has been in my high end wishlist for quite awhile.

The Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector (liquid) has always been in my high end wishlist ever since Lisa Eldridge raved about this product on her channel. It smells great when I swatch it, it smells very fresh almost like a soap. I really like the smell. I bought mine in Opal and it turned out to be such a pretty pearlescent pink with a golden undertone. When blended on the skin however, it just melts into my skin and it has a nice golden natural wet sheen look on the skin. This is perfect for the model off day wet look. I love how natural it looks and how light it feels. The texture is somewhat reminiscent of a serum, except that this has a glow factor like no other serum I have tried.

It is important to note however, this product does have shimmer particles once blended. It's not that visible on the face but it was pretty visible on the back of my hand.

It retails for RM189 and you will get 50ml of products, which might seem a little steep however, a little bit goes a long way with this product. 1 full pump was more than enough to cover my whole face and light it up with this ethereal glow-from-within wonder of a product. So, if you are not looking to slather this product all over your face and use it sparingly like it was intended to, then I would say this product shall last you for quite awhile. There are 5 different color selections to choose from that would suit people with different skin tones.

The next item that I bought was the Cover FX Custom Cover Drops. I was so excited to purchase this ever since I saw Tati raved about this on her channel. She looked gorgeous with this on! I bought mine in N40. I almost bought the wrong colour if it has not been for the awesome color finding tool they have on the Cover FX website. So, if you are buying this, please make sure you check out this tool before purchasing the wrong color for yourself as this product comes with a whopping RM220 price tag. (The link is provided at the bottom of the post)

Again, this is quite an expensive product but it gives incredible coverage. I have not tried this on my face yet, so I cant comment much on how long wearing it is or how it looks once you blend it out. When I swatch it on my hand and neck, it was a perfect color for me as it blends completely into my skin. Blended on the back of my hand, it really didnt feel cakey at all. At first it feels a bit sticky but as it blends into my skin, the stickiness disappears and it just covers so well and it feels like there is nothing on my skin. Cant wait to try this one my whole face and give you guys a detailed review. The Cover FX Custom Cover Drops comes in 25 different shades, so no matter the color of your skin, you are bound to find one that is suitable for your skin tone. In case you've been living under a rock (makeup-wise) and have no idea what this product is, it is basically a pure pigment that you can mix in with your primer, moisturizer or sun-block to your desired amount of coverage.

Based on the Cover FX website,
1 drop = sheer coverage
2 drops = medium coverage
3 drops = full coverage
4 drop = total coverage

If you guys have been on the fence about buying this product, I recommend that you do go ahead and get this but know that you would probably need to save up a little as this is one of those investment pieces in your capsule makeup. But if you guys are still unsure, do wait for my in-depth review of both products to make your decision. Remember, shop smart and spend your hard earned money wisely :)

This was my first time purchasing items on the Sephora My website and I gotta say I am so happy that Sephora finally has an online shop so I can shop my favorite beauty products from the comfort of my own home. Furthermore, I can make better purchases as I can look up reviews and read the comments sections as I go along. My items came in after 3 days which was so prompt and my products came in such good conditions. Navigating through their website was a breeze as well, as the search bar on the top right corner help me find everything I need really quickly. I was also so freaking grateful that the online shop has such a big selection of brands even the brands that are not available in the physical store such as Cover Fx. I actually went to a physical store to swatch the Cover FX Custom Cover Drops a few months prior, but to my dismay I found out that they did not offer Cover FX at the physical store, I was told by one of the employees that I can only purchase Cover FX online. So, I'm also grateful that the online store has a wide selection of products and brands that are different to the physical store so it gives Malaysian consumers a lot more brands to chose from.

These are some of the most drool worthy brands offered at Sephora.my

P.S. I apologize if you guys notice a difference in quality on some of the product photos compared to the swatches, it's cause I use a 50mm lens and it's really hard to use it for short distance photos and for those swatches photos I had to use my phone instead. I hope you can still see the pictures clearly.

First off, let me go ahead and explain to you why after 6 years of being a makeup geek and junkie that I suddenly decided to make the leap to cruelty free makeup. I have somewhat always been intrigued by the whole concept of cruelty free makeup for obvious reasons. I don't think anyone should get hurt in the process of producing any kind of product that I use every single day. I can't stomach the fact that non- consenting and innocent animals are experimented on and probably even tortured for me. I just can't. (I mentioned non-consenting because one of the alternatives to animal testing is human testing that is with their consent, other alternatives include using chemicals that have been proven to be safe and thus does not need further testing and lastly)

Even though I've always wanted to take this leap. I never knew enough about it to make the leap. Any beauty junkie have always had this thought when they consider going cruelty free,

"But there won't be enough good products for me to use if I go cruelty free, right? I mean what brands are cruelty free and what aren't?"
I for one was guilty of thinking that and due to very little information about cruelty free brands that I was scared to make the leap.Thankfully, in recent years more and more beauty bloggers and vloggers made the leap and started making more and more content on cruelty free brands. In my recent google search on this matter, I realize I was mistaken. There are quite a few good number of brands that have now decided to go cruelty free and some of these brands are affordable too! Furthermore, all products that are manufactured in the EU are completely cruelty free and South Korea is on its way to do the same!

So for those of you who are thinking of going down the same path as I did, I've compiled a list of links to blogs where you can find further information on the matter. You can also follow my Cruelty Free Brand Pinterest board where I would pin as much information as I can find on this matter! Find me on Pinterest! Just search @ailanyzabidin and follow me!

Here's a video that helped me to finally make the leap!

Now, my perception on this matter is that, just like going Vegan, it's a FREAKING CHOICE. It's up to you to do it (go cruelty free) or not. Nobody should judge you if you don't.

I won't start preaching to you or try to impose my thoughts and beliefs on this matter to anyone at all. Furthermore, even though I have decided to go cruelty free, I have not thrown out any of my old products, simply because it would be such a waste. So, I have decided to use it all up before I start buying Cruelty Free Products.

So, there you go, I hope that my list helped you to be more informed on this matter and that is the whole purpose of the post is that, you make an informed decision. Whether or not you take the Cruelty Free plunge is totally yours to decide, my job is simply to share with you what I have found and frankly I am excited by the brands that I have seen go Cruelty Free. It is not as limiting as I have always thought. I do have quite a number of options. So if you have been toying about this plunge
I hope my post was informative enough. Although, I am sad to let of go certain brands like MAC and Bobbi Brown and perhaps Urban Decay  (I can't quite decide yet, UD does not test on animals but its parent company does) but it's time that I put aside my own needs and do what I think is right for me.  I hope this post finds you in a positive spirit in which it was intended. So for those of you who are veterans at cruelty free makeup/ skincare feel free to drop by here every so often and impart your wisdom. Let us all share our knowledge and thoughts so that we can all make better and informed decisions as consumers!

Spread love, spread positivity.

Sometimes there are things in life that were not benefitting us at all, like that toxic friendship or relationship, that job we're not passionate about or even being in an environment which we're not happy in. Looking back it became clear to me that letting go was the best option. For so long, I let it happen without my consent and I was angry but I had no one else to blame. So I took the leap, and I packed my proverbial bags and I left. Without saying a word. At times I feel guilty, at times I feel like I miss it, but more so, I realize I miss the person that I used to be when I had it.

But, I realize that I had to let go in order to make space for something greater in my life. And at first I struggled, I was heartbroken, angry and terrified. After all, I have never been one that is so fond of changes. And what a change it was. I didn't know what the future held for me. Yet, I know with every fibre in my being that I made the right move to leave.

I used to have conversations with my friends, my husband and my family about my choice of letting go as if I was trying to validate my choice. But I felt the biggest relieve when I finally realize that I don't have to explain to anyone anything, I don't owe anyone anything. (Although I did explain my situation to my closest ones out of kindness) For so long, I have let other people influence me and I crave for their approval that I'd do things that I don't want to do. A sense of satisfaction came over me when I realized that the only approval, the only opinion that matters, is mine. And that I have the power to decide for myself. This is my life after all. Once I let other people dictate my life, make choices for me, I've given them that power over me. And by making my own choices, for the first time, after such a long time, I've taken back that power.

I've let go of who I thought I was. I thought that having this thing, would make me feel complete. Making me feel less lonely somehow. I realized now that you are never lonely, if you listen to yourself, do what's best for you and put your own needs first and fulfil those. I realize that lonely is not about number or popularity, loneliness is about being out of touch with oneself. We find the best of friends, in ourselves, if we start to be kind to ourselves and listen to our deepest thoughts and make it our live mission to live based on our choices, our terms and our decisions. By letting go and taking back my power I have found myself again, I've learned to be kinder to myself, to listen to my body and respect my own decisions. And never have I felt so free. Now when I look back, I think not of the times when I felt lost and angry because of this toxic thing that I held onto for so long, instead I think of all the good times and why it was better for me to let go. I have no grudges about the past but I know for a fact that I never want to go back there again. Letting go was one of the best decision I've ever made.

Hello, Urban Hippies! Recently in December of 2015, I decided to stock up on some Korean skincare. I've done multiple small purchases with Hermo.my and, this time, I did not hold back. (As per outlined in my ARE YOU AN ONLINE SHOPPING VIRGIN? blog post where I wrote about how to be a smart online shopper if you haven't read it click the link to read up on that guide). Christmas or the end of the year is the time to splurge after all as most things will be on sale!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with this website, Hermo.my is a Malaysian online beauty shop where Asian skincare and beauty products can be purchased! These products are sourced directly from the brand's suppliers and distributors so it is 100% guaranteed to be original.

The box came in an amber colour with a christmas theme to it!

Although, the box was a little bit dented, thankfully, all of the products were all in good condition, thanks to their meticulous packaging.

The items that I bought were:

1. Twin Pack Soothing and Moisture Aloe Vera 92% Soothing Gel 300 ml(RM35) by Nature Republic
  •  My thoughts on the product // It's a soothing and moisturizing gel without being too sticky or creamy. It's great for tropical climate as it is also cooling on the skin. I personally use this as a moisturizer on days I don't need a creamy moisturizer or mixed in with some facial oil as a hydrating mask.
  • Cosdna analysis: http://cosdna.com/eng/cosmetic_57d371064.html
2. Premium Lettuce and Cucumber Watery Toner 180ml (RM42) by Skin Food
  • My thoughts on the product // An amazing toner with a watery texture but with a slightly sticky feeling when applied to the face. As the name suggests it contains Lettuce and Cucumber so it is purported to be hydrating and soothing on the skin. I find that it helps retain moisture as it is slightly sticky and I have to really pat it into my skin so that it gets absorbed into my skin but above all it smells amazing! It also leaves my skin feeling supple and fresh after using it.
  • Cosdna analysis: http://cosdna.com/eng/cosmetic_5a1e31771.html
3. Rice and Ceramic Toner for all skin types (RM15) by The Face Shop
  • My thoughts on the product // Enriched with rice extract, this product is meant to help nourish and moisturize skin, as well as help replenish skin's moisture barrier with Ceramide. I have not used this toner yet but I will review it as soon as I do.
  • Cosdna analysis: http://cosdna.com/eng/cosmetic_5a1e31771.html
4. Soothing and Moisture Aloe Vera Cleansing Gel Foam (RM20.50) by Nature Republic
  • My thoughts on the product // This is one of my holy grail cleansers just like The Body Shop Vitamin E Cream Cleanser, this cleanser is amazing on my dehydrated skin. It does not dry out my skin and my face feels squeaky clean after using it. I like to use it as a second cleanse after my facial oil.
  • Cosdna analysis: http://cosdna.com/eng/cosmetic_77f2188186.html
5. Marshmallow Puff (RM 21.50) by Too Cool for School.
  • My thoughts on the product //  I've only used it once thus far, but as I was using it, it felt a bit too dense and as a result too tough to be called a "sponge". There's no denying that by dampening this with a little bit of water, this puff helps tremendously to blend my concealer like a dream. It is great at achieving the most natural looking foundation or concealer. However, it did feel like it was a bit tough. Perhaps, I did not douse it in enough water? Perhaps by doing so, it might actually turn into a sponge texture? Regardless of its texture, it did blend my concealer really well. I was surprised by how natural my concealed under eye looked after I used this puff to blend out the concealer I applied to that region. At RM21.50, I say this is an amazing and a value for money dupe to the Beauty Blender.
I love how the Hermo team seemed to put a lot of effort and thought into the packaging of every purchase. Furthermore,  I love that I often get free vouchers, brochures or even sample of products with every purchase, just like if I was buying in Korea.

All in all, I was really satisfied with how fast the shipping was  with my third and biggest purchase from Hermo and how everything was wrapped neatly and securely. I will definitely be a loyal customer to Hermo.my from now on!

On the 10th of December, I was invited to the Fresh Look Fresh Faces Colorgirl Search at The Bee, Publika. Where I witnessed girls handpicked by the jury through rigorous selection processes involving 26 universities, six universities prom night and eight university classroom curriculum engagements to compete for the title of the Fresh Look's Fresh Face for their Colorgirl Search 2015.

Fresh Look owned by Alcon is a brand that specializes in Color Contact Lenses. Throughout the competition, all of the contestants were wearing Fresh Look Color Contact Lenses that uses 3 in 1 color technology to make the contacts look natural. As someone who's wearing specs myself, I feel really intrigued to try out these color contacts to see how natural they look.

Some reputable names were present as juries including celebrity model Miss Amber Chia, the CEO of the Malaysian Youth Community, Mr. Jason Ko and the Marketing Manager of Fresh Look, Mr. Simon Koi.

There were some rad performances by Lu and Friends and Sheikh Gadafi.

The girls look ever so elegant in their dinner dresses sponsored by Zalora that the judges had a difficult time deliberating.

Fret not, the next round certainly helped to weed out the best contestants with the most sparkling twinkle in their eyes, the biggest hearts, and the brightest minds as this round required them to introduce themselves and answer the question of "how do you incorporate colors in your life, to make it more colorful?". Sounds very abstract, for sure, but there were some really great answers among the contestants. During this round, they also strutted down the runway in their favorite street style.

After much deliberation by the judges and some refreshments courtesy of The Bee, the winners were announced. The top 12 contestants were given a certificate of participation appreciation and an RM200 worth of voucher from Amber Chia Academy, Zalora and  hamper from Kiss Me. The lucky Grand Prize winner wins a participation appreciation certification, Amber Chia Academy vouchers worth an RM1000, Zalora vouchers worth RM500, Kiss Me hamper worth RM600, a camera worth Rm1799 and a grand prize trip and a photoshoot session in New York City, USA.

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to have a little Q& A session with the winner, Miss Katrina Kayora Ong, who is currently doing an ADTP program at Inti International University, Nilai.

Q : How does it feel to win?
A : Honestly, I'm still quite speechless, when they said my name, I was like, "did I hear it right?" It was really overwhelming.
Q : Do you have any message to young girls who would like to enter or try to enter competitions such as this?
A : You know what, don't be afraid. Definitely, just go for it. Eventhough, it feels so far-fetched and it's so outside of your comfort zone. Believe me, this was really out of my comfort zone and this competition really helped me build my confidence. That's just how it is, you take chances and you learn from it.
Q : Lastly, what's your favorite color?
A : I have to say blue.

Overall, I had so much fun and I want to extend my gratitude to Fresh Look for inviting me to witness this amazing event! Furthermore, I would like to congratulate the 30 finalists, the top 12 winners, the grand prize winner Miss Katrina Ong and lastly Fresh Look for putting together such an amazing event. If I was a little bit younger, heck I would have wanted to join too! It was such a great effort by Fresh Look to look for talents amongst the younger generation and I am truly proud I had to be apart of a positive movement such as this!
